From Vieux Gaultier to Robert de Visée: the lute in 17th-century France — Lecture demo
Timothy Burris, baroque lute & theorbo
The French lute tradition of the 17th century was remarkable for the quality of the music and the honor accorded the leading lutenists of the day. But the lute tradition was also noteworthy for the influence it had on the broader music culture of the time–particularly keyboardists. Timothy Burris will present a sampling of the lute and theorbo repertoire of the period, as well as discussing the cultural context in which it was born.
Timothy Burris has performed throughout Europe and the US, both as a soloist and an accompanist. He has appeared in concert with such esteemed artists as the mezzo Jennifer Lane and the keyboardist Robert Hill, as well as under the baton of Peter Schreier and René Clemencic, among others. In a review of The Songs of Philip Rosseter, Part II, The Lute Society Magazine said of his skills as an accompanist: “Burris … plays with beautiful tone and is an absolutely first-class accompanist.” Tim taught lute for six years at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, and currently teaches at Colby College and the Portland Conservatory of Music.
Free and open to the public, starting at 12 pm at the Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square, Portland, ME 04011.
