Conductor for Boy Singers of Maine (BSOM)

We have a job opening for a part-time conductor for Portland, Maine-based boy choir with a 35+ year history. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person as we move the organization into a bright future as a parallel choir with the Girl Singers of Maine.

The ideal candidate will have the necessary skills to recruit new members and grow the BSOM. To support the choir’s continuing growth, this dynamic person works with the PCM Executive Director and the GSOM Director and choir staff to provide musical development and foundational excitement to the boys.

The conductor must offer an engaging yet friendly and nurturing atmosphere for young musicians to find their vocal technique while enjoying inspiring group camaraderie. We value authentic and joyful creative expression while learning to work together for high musical achievement.

The conductor prepares for and conducts the younger and older ensembles in weekly rehearsals and performances. The conductor implements an educational plan designed to enhance the singers’ musical skills and knowledge. The conductor collaborates with the GSOM Director, the PCM Executive Director, and the Board of Directors to provide achievement of the artistic goals, objectives and long-range plans of the Portland Conservatory of Music and the Boy Singers of Maine.

Qualifications and skills:

• Genuine enjoyment and love of children
• Experienced choral conductor with a bachelor’s degree in Music or higher
• Experienced in working with children of multiple ages, especially younger students ages 6-9 years
• Minimum of two (2) years previous experience in choral conducting/music education
• Favorable connections to local schools and community
• Energetic and engaging personality, with eagerness to grow and develop the program
• Historical knowledge of children’s choral repertoire
• Strong organizational, problem solving and positive communication skills
• Proficient in piano/keyboard skills preferred
• Musical theater/performing arts, stage management background a plus
• Marketing/recruiting and graphic design skills a plus

Experience: Music teaching: 1 year minimum

Education: Bachelor’s, required; MMus in Conducting, ideal

BSOM Conductor Duties and Responsibilities:

• With the GSOM Music Director, recruits and auditions singers from the greater Portland area
• Conducts rehearsals and performances (finds a replacement if unable to attend)
• Collaborates to design yearly events to develop and implement educational programs for singers
• Seeks and solidifies beneficial opportunities to perform beyond usual engagements
• Develops and maintains strong collegial relationships with PCM staff
• Represents BSOM at community events
• Conducts at BSOM concerts, recitals, calendar events
• Maintains availability 2 hours before call time for prep work and up to 2 hours after performance for wrap up work
• Acts as a chaperone whenever needed

Job Type: Part-time
Weekly rehearsal: 2 hours
Semester: 16 weeks per semester, 2 semesters per year

Salary competitive and determined upon education and experience, with opportunities for growth in the part-time position.
